Growing up in Wisconsin, the "dairy state" (though I guess California now produces more dairy products than we do), generations of my family owned and worked on farms. My cousin is the last one who still farms today, and whenever I visit that side of the family, I relish walking in the pasture, communing with his herd of jersey cows, and feeling a sense of what it was like for my ancestors who came here from Germany to farm in the nineteenth century.
